Goya Foods creates $20,000 nationwide Culinary Arts Scholarship

GritoBlast! Goya Foods, the largest Latino-owned food company in the nation, sells over 2,400 different products. A recent announcement of a three-state, $300 million expansion underscores the commitment the company has to creating and delivering the kinds of spices and foods that have become increasingly popular to the palates of both Latino and non-Latino foodies.

But Goya hasn’t achieved its success without evolving from its humble beginnings in 1936 when Prudencio Unanue Ortiz and his wife, Carolina, Spanish immigrants opened their original shop in Manhattan selling imported foods such as sardines and olives to Latino families in the area.

Keeping an eye on the future, more recipes with new flavors will need to be created. So, Goya’s announcement of a $20,000 nationwide Culinary Arts Scholarship makes sense.

The Culinary Arts Scholarship will be granted annually to four students entering their freshman year of college to obtain their first undergraduate degree in culinary arts and/or a food sciences area of study.

Goya’s Culinary Arts Scholarship is available on a competitive basis to students entering an accredited two-year or four-year institution. Scholarships are in the amount of $5,000 awarded per academic year starting in Fall 2015 and are renewable for up to three additional years provided the student remains eligible to receive funding.

“As the leader in Latin American food, Goya’s Culinary Arts Scholarship Program is one of our educational pillars and part of our mission to celebrate, nurture, and preserve Goya’s diverse culinary heritage and future,” says Peter Unanue, executive vice president of Goya Foods. “We pride ourselves on authenticity, high-quality, and culinary traditions and established this special scholarship in order to provide students the opportunity to pursue their passion in the culinary arts and food sciences industries.”

Applicants of the Goya Culinary Arts Scholarship will be selected based on the standard requirements established by Goya and administered by Scholarship America® including academic achievement, leadership and financial need, as well as an evaluation of an essay explaining how Goya has enriched their family traditions.

Among the criteria for consideration, students (1) Must plan to be enrolled in college full time starting in Fall 2015 in a degree seeking program within the U.S. as a Freshman at a two or four-year U.S. accredited institution to obtain their 1st undergraduate degree; (2) Must be majoring in Culinary Arts and/or Food Sciences; (3) Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale; (4) Must complete 10 hours per month of community service while in progress; (5) Must be a U.S. Citizen or a legal permanent resident of the United States with a valid Social Security Number or have been granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
